Weird Orange Thing in Your Basket


Sometimes I forget what isn't really mainstream and assume everyone will be able to identify the basket's fruit. That happened last week with our delicious Fuyu persimmons. The fattened, orange-colored, shiny orange fruit that looks something like a tomato, is a persimmon. You can eat it like an apple. I like the skin. This fruit also makes a premium dried-fruit product. Slice in thin layers and dry out of direct sun. We have to pick them when they still have a little green blush on them because of wiley coyote's fondness for the tree-ripened ones. If there's still a little green on yours, let it sit on your counter for a few days.

..... Collards are here this week. Mild flavored and nutrient dense, these leafy greens are often overlooked but are worth a try! Be careful not to overcook--like other cruciferous veggies--overcooked collards have an unpleasant odor. A cancer preventing cruciferous vegetable--recent studies indicate that steamed collard greens have the greatest cholesteral-lowering ability of all leafy greens. Harvest Shot April 8-9 2014

Harvest shot for this week. We lost much of our early mulberry crop to unseasonably windy nights. Just such a disappointment to see so much of our beautiful fruit on the ground. Squeaked by with very small portions for all Large Shares this week from our earliest trees. We do have half an acre of later fruit coming in, and look forward to a less meager provisions.
